The Fundamental Principles of AMEC Membership

The Association of Mining & Exploration Companies (AMEC) and its members subscribe to certain fundamental principles in conducting their business operations. The shared understanding of these principles demonstrates to regulators, the business community and the community at large the commitment of AMEC and its members to ensuring positive economic, environmental and social outcomes.

AMEC's membership is diverse and includes entities and individuals directly and indirectly associated with mineral exploration and mining in Australia. The operations of AMEC members are just as diverse and vary significantly. Consequently, the core principles provide the underpinning framework upon which AMEC and its members conduct their operations rather than prescribe specific behaviours.

Each individual, or entity, is cognisant of their own circumstances and will apply the principles to their conduct and that of their business on a case-by-case basis and in a manner that is:

(a) Consistent with sound corporate governance; and

(b) Conducive to achieving optimal commercial development, environmental biodiversity and social integrity.

As members of AMEC, the mineral exploration and mining industry, the business community and the community at large, we strive for continual improvement, sound corporate governance and optimal commercial, environmental and social development.

In endeavouring to achieve these outcomes we will:

1.    Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of risk management and corporate governance.

2.   Integrate sustainable development considerations within the decision-making process.

3.   Engage and communicate with all stakeholders in an effective and transparent manner.

4.   Foster economic growth, employment and business development.

5.   Foster and contribute to the economic, social and institutional development of the communities in which we operate.

6.   Uphold fundamental human rights and respect the cultures, customs and values in our dealings with employees and others affected by our activities.

7.   Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance.

8.   Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance.

9.   Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning.

10.   Facilitate and encourage responsible use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products.
