Single environmental approval portal welcomed
An environmental approval is the major approval for a mine with substantial cost, time and effort for companies and regulators alike.
The Federal Government’s commitment to collaborate with the Western Australian Government to deliver a single digital environmental approvals process and biodiversity database is a critically important initiative that will lead to streamlining and reducing approval timelines.
“The Prime Minister’s announcement will contribute towards making a material difference to approval timeframes for environmental approvals,” said Warren Pearce, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies.
“As the Prime Minister observed last night at the Business Council in speech, it is estimated that the better use of technology could cut the environmental approvals process for a major complex project by between 6 and 18 months.”
“For several years AMEC has been actively engaged with Federal and State Governments on reducing approvals timeframes, and has called for the streamlining of approvals in our Federal policy Platform”
“This announcement comes alongside a broad Commonwealth commitment to cutting red tape which includes the review of the Environmental Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act and the Deregulation Task force.”
“The Western Australian State Government has been driving reform through Streamline WA, and the proposed single digital approvals process and biodiversity database provides an example of how State approvals could also be improved between Departments.”
“Today’s announcement is a welcomed step to reduce red tape, cost and timeframes in environmental approvals."
“All other Australian jurisdictions should also engage in the single digital environmental approvals process and biodiversity database, “said Mr Pearce.
